Rowing is one of the four individual sports in which India has a solitary athlete participating.

Balraj Panwar will be India’s sole representative in rowing at Paris Olympics 2024. He would be one of India’s first athletes in action, as the men’s single sculls heats get underway on the very first morning after the opening ceremony in Paris.

The rowing events are scheduled from July 27 to August 3 at the National Olympic Nautical Stadium of Île-de-France in Vaires-sur-Marne.

A total of 502 quota places were available in the sport, 24 less than the tally available at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. There will be an equal number of men and women. The spots have been divided across 14 events.

Romania will have the highest representation in the water sport, with 45 rowers, followed closed by the United States of America and Great Britain with 42 rowers each.

Men’s rowing made its debut at the Summer Games in 1900 at Paris, while women’s rowing was introduced in 1976. Changes were made in 2016, according to which the events are now conducted. The USA is the most successful nation in the sport, having won a total of 89 medals (33 gold).

India made its Olympic debut in the sport at the 2000 Sydney edition, with Kasam Khan and Inderpal Singh participating in the men’s coxless pairs. Ever since, the contingent has had a minimum of one rower. But the republic has never medaled in the sport.

In the previous edition Tokyo, the duo of Arvind Singh and Arjun Lal Jat finished an impressive 11th in the lightweight men’s double sculls.

Balraj Panwar is the 12th rower to represent India at the Olympics. He booked a spot for Paris, by clinching the bronze medal at the Asia-Oceania Olympic Qualification rowing competition in Chungju, South Korea in April this year. Interestingly, the 24-year-old was leading for 80% of the distance in the 2km race but lost a bit of steam at the end of the race. Nevertheless, his initial effort was sufficient to win him a quota place.

The armyman from Karnal, Haryana had narrowly missed out on a bronze medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year. He was initially a second reserve, but his relentless spirit made the Rowing Federation of India field him for the continental showpiece. Fair to say, he didn’t disappoint!

Panwar, who trains under Chief Coach Ismail Baig and reputed Olympian Bajrang Lal Takhar (who had participated at the 2008 Beijing edition), would be looking to make a mark at his debut Olympic Games.
