India has won at least one medal in wrestling at the past four Olympics

As the 2024 Paris Olympics approach, India is gearing up with high hopes for its best Olympic performance yet. The country’s Olympic journey has seen steady improvement in recent years, with athletes consistently bringing home medals in various sports.

India’s Olympic success has been on an upward trend. The 2020 Tokyo Games marked a high point, with Indian athletes winning a record seven medals. This surpassed their previous best of six medals at the 2012 London Olympics.

Wrestling has been a strong suit for India since 2008, with the country winning medals in this sport at every Olympics since then. Badminton has also emerged as a medal-producing sport for India. Saina Nehwal broke new ground in 2012 by winning India’s first Olympic badminton medal. P.V. Sindhu has carried on this success, winning medals in both 2016 and 2020.

Looking ahead to Paris, India is not just relying on its established stars. New faces like Lakshya Sen in badminton and Nikhat Zareen in boxing will be making their Olympic debuts. These newcomers carry the hopes of millions of Indians as they step onto the world’s biggest sporting stage for the first time.

Now, let’s take a look at India’s top five medal prospects at the Paris Olympics:

Athletics (Javelin Throw)

Neeraj Chopra, who won gold in Tokyo, is expected to shine again. He’s been throwing well, winning big competitions like the Diamond League and World Championships. His recent throw of 88.88m at the Asian Games shows he’s in top form.

Badminton

India has a strong team this time. Along with two-time Olympic medalist P.V. Sindhu, there’s the world-class doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, and singles players H.S. Prannoy and Lakshya Sen. India has won badminton medals at the last three Olympics and will hope to continue this streak.

Boxing

Lovlina Borgohain, who won bronze in Tokyo, is aiming for another medal. She recently became world champion in a new weight category. Nikhat Zareen, a first-time Olympian, is also a strong contender. She’s won gold at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games.

Hockey

The men’s team, led by Manpreet Singh, won bronze in Tokyo – their first Olympic hockey medal since 1980. As former eight-time Olympic champions, they’re looking to medal again in Paris.

Weightlifting

Mirabai Chanu, silver medalist from Tokyo, is a top contender. She’s been performing well, including a gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Weightlifting has been a good sport for India at the Olympics, with Karnam Malleswari winning India’s first women’s Olympic medal in this sport in 2000.

While it’s hard to predict if this will be India’s best Olympics, these sports are likely to be key in determining India’s final medal count
