Harvinder Singh defeated Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek 6-0 in finals.

Harvinder Singh, the 33-year-old Indian archer, has made history by becoming the first from the country to win a gold medal in para-archery at the Paralympics. The Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist put on a dominant show in the final, defeating Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek 6-0 in the men’s individual recurve open final in Paris Paralympics 2024 to be crowned the champion.

Harvinder, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in Economics, showcased every possible virtue the sports needed to clinch the medal. He won five consecutive matches in a single day, displaying neither fatigue nor nerves as he recorded his name in the history books and clinched India’s second medal in archery at the Paralympics.

Born in Kaithal, Haryana, Harvinder comes from a farming family. At just 18 months old, a dengue treatment left him with permanent leg issues. Despite this challenge, he found a new passion in para-archery after watching the 2012 London Paralympics.

He made his international debut in 2017 at the Para Archery World Championship, finishing seventh. This was only the start of his incredible journey. In 2018, he won a gold medal at the Jakarta Asian Para Games.

Harvinder then won a bronze medal in an individual archery event at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. At the 2022 Asian Para Games, held in 2023, he was part of the Indian team that also secured a bronze medal.

In June 2024, he earned another bronze at the Para Archery World Ranking event in the Czech Republic. Earlier that year, in April, he achieved a bronze medal at the World Archery Oceania Para Grand Prix in Australia.

Harvinder’s gold medal at the Paralympics wasn’t just his personal victory—it was a moment of national pride. People across India celebrated his amazing achievement, with congratulatory messages flooding in. Even the Prime Minister of India sent his best wishes.

On Twitter, fans and well-wishers praised the para-archer for his inspiring accomplishment.
