Paris Paralympics 2024: Harvinder Singh, Pooja finish fourth after mixed archery recurve semi-final defeat
India’s archery campaign finishes with two medals at Paris Paralympics 2024.
India’s Pooja and Harvinder Singh finished fourth in the archery recurve mixed open event team after losing the bronze medal playoff match 4-5 (33-30, 29-34, 38-33, 29-34, 17-19) against Slovenia’s Ziva Lavrinc and Dejan Fabcic in Paris Paralympics 2024.
Harvinder, who scripted history yesterday by clinching India’s first-ever gold in archery, partnered with Pooja Jatyan in the mixed team recurve archery event. They looked to have settled well but the semi-final defeat to top seeds Italy left them needing to beat Slovenia for the bronze medal. Slovenia, ranked 3rd, won the shoot-off with a 9 & 10 to win their first medal.
India started well by taking the first set and took a 2-0 lead. However, they had a disastrous second shot as both Harvinder and Pooja hit 6 and 5 respectively to lose the second set 29-34. The scores were tied and in the third set, the Indians did find their targets as both shot 19 in two arrows to win the third set and take a 4-2 lead. They needed just a tied score in the final set to win the match.
After the first half of the fourth set, the scores were equal. The Slovenian then hit 18 in the next two arrows to take their total to 34. Indians needed just a combined score of 18 to win the match. However, Pooja scored a 5 followed by an 8 from Harvinder.
In the shoot-off, Harvinder hit an 8 and Pooja hit a 9. In reply, the Slovenians showed consistency as they shot 19 to win the bronze medal. It was the first-ever archery medal for Slovenia.
After finishing fifth in the ranking round, the Indian team started their campaign with a shaky win over Australia in the shoot-off. After winning the first two sets, the Indians struggled in the next two. They won in the shoot-off.
The quarter-final was quite opposite to the Round of 16 win as they won 6-0 with a dominating performance. In the semifinals, India started badly but upped their game in the last two sets. However, Italy proved to be too good in the fourth set as India lost the match.
