Which sports are India participating in for the first time at Paris Paralympics 2024?
India are participating in three sports for the first time.
The Paris Paralympics 2024 is all set to kick off on August 28 and will run until September 8. The 12-day sporting extravaganza will witness about 184 nations competing in 22 Paralympic sports. In this edition of the quadrennial games, India is sending its largest-ever contingent with 84 athletes slated to compete at the Paris Paralympics.
In the last edition held in Tokyo, India had sent a strong 54-member contingent who ensured the nation had a successful campaign as they returned home with a phenomenal 19 overall medals, including 5 gold, 8 silver, and 6 bronze medals. Owing to the record-setting medal tally, India concluded its journey at the Tokyo Paralympics on a high with a 24th-place finish in the medal table.
At the Paris Paralympics, Indian athletes will be aiming to deliver another outstanding performance as they look to break into the top 20 in the medal tally. This time, the nation will make its debut in three sports- Para Cycling, Para Rowing, and Blind Judo, where the athletes will be eyeing a medal-winning show.
Let’s dive into knowing more about these sports in which Indian athletes will make their debut at the Paris Paralympics.
Para Cycling
India will be competing for the first time in the Paralympics history in Para Cycling in Paris. The sport will see the participation of two Indians – Arshad Shaik and Jyoti Gaderiya. Shaik will compete in the Road Time Trial C2, Road Race C1-3, and on the Track in the 1000m Time Trial C1-3 and the 3000m Pursuit C2.
Meanwhile, Gaderiya will take part in the Road Time Trial C1-3, Road Race C1-3, and on the Track in the 500m Time Trial C1-3 and the 3000m Pursuit C1-3.
Shaik earned a quota to feature in the Paris Paralympics after winning the silver in the men’s individual time trial in the C2 division at the Asian Para-Cycling Road Championships 2024. On the other hand, Gaderiya bagged the gold medal at the prestigious tournament in the C2 category.

Para Rowing
Anita and Narayana Konganapalle will mark India’s participation for the first time in Rowing as they will represent the nation in the PR3 mixed double sculls event at the Paris Paralympics 2024.
The Indian athletes advanced to the Summer Games after qualifying one boat in the mixed double sculls class as they won the Asian/Oceania Continental Qualification Regatta held in Chungju, South Korea. They clinched the gold medal in the event with a score of 7:50.80 seconds.
Blind Judo
For the first time in the history of Paralympics, India will make its appearance in Blind Judo as Kapil Parmar and Kokila Kaushiklate will be the country’s representatives in the men’s J1 -60 kg and women’s J2 -48 kg, respectively.
Both athletes secured their spots for the Paris Paralympics by achieving enough World Rankings in the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Judo Paralympic Rankings. The World Ranking list for the Paris Paralympics started on September 1, 2022, and concluded on June 24, 2024.
