Paris Paralympics 2024: Who are India's medal contenders today September 2 (Day 5)?

India will contend for medals in several para-badminton and para-athletics events today.

India had a fabulous Sunday in Paris Paralympics 2024 as they not only added few medals but also confirmed more for Monday. Preethi Pal created history by winning bronze in the women’s 200m T35 finals. She cracked her new personal best timing of 30.01s to become the first-ever Indian woman to win two medals in track and field events in Paralympics or Olympics.

Another Indian who added a second Paralympics medal is Nishad Kumar in the Men’s High Jump T47 finals. The 24-year-old produced his season best height of 2.04m to get his second silver medal from as many Paralympics. Para Badminton is the Golden Goose of India in Paris Paralympics as India will have seven medal matches on Monday including three individuals having a shot at gold.

Nitesh Kumar — Para Badminton — Men’s Singles SL3 — Gold Medal Match — 3:30 PM

Nitesh Kumar will look to seal India’s first Gold medal in Para Badminton of the Paris Paralympics 2024. The 30-year-old will look to defend India’s gold in the SL3 Men’s Singles Para Badminton category won by Pramod Bhagat in Tokyo. The World No. #3 has been great form winning all three Group games.

In the semis, he was up against Japan’s Daisuke Fujihara and he sealed a spot in the finals with a straight sets win. His quest for gold will have a huge obstacle in Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell who has dominated wins over all his opponents in this Paralympics. It will be a fascinating contest to watch out for.

Thulasimathi Murugesan — Para Badminton — Women’s Singles SU5 — Gold Medal Match – 8:00 PM

Thulasimathi Murugesan has made it to the finals of Women’s Singles event in her debut Paralympics. She has been in the headlines after winning gold, silver and bronze in the 2022 Asian Para Games. With convincing wins in the Group games, she made it to the semis.

She was up against fellow Indian Manisha Ramdass and a straight set win helped her make it to the finals. The Tamil Nadu-girl will look to grab the headlines again as she aims for the gold.

Suhas Yathiraj — Para Badminton — Men’s Singles SL4 — Gold Medal Match — 9:40 PM

Some unfinished business is up for grabs for Suhas Yathiraj in the finals of Men’s Singles SL4 Para Badminton. The 41-year-old lost the finals of the Tokyo Paralympics and came back home with a silver. It was an historical medal as he became the first IAS officer to win a Paralympic medal, it wasn’t enough for him. The reigning world champion would want to make the world stand for India’s national anthem.

Manisha Ramadass — Para Badminton — Women’s Singles SU5 — Bronze Medal Match — 8:00 PM

Manisha Ramdass is an example of wanting to be best in everything. Making her debut in 2022, the Tamil Nadu-girl became the World No. #1 in the same year. She was also awarded the BWF Para -Badminton player of the year award. Her accolades include five medals in World Championships including Gold in 2022.

She is still a teenager and could win a Paralympic medal if she could beat Denmark’s Catherine Rosengren in the Bronze medal match.

Sukant Kadam — Para Badminton — Men’s Singles SL4 — Bronze Medal Match — 9:40 PM

India could very well witness another history with a double place finish on the podium in an event in the Paris Paralympics. Sukant Kadam will be competing in the bronze medal for the Men’s Singles SL4. Sukant lost to fellow Indian and top-seeded Suhas Yathiraj in the semifinals and now will be competing for a bronze. His opponent will be Indonesia’s Fredy Setiawan who has convincing wins in the finals.

Sivarajan Solaimalai & Nithya Sre Sivan — Para Badminton — Mixed Doubles SH6 — Bronze Medal Match — 1:40 PM

The Mixed doubles pair of Sivarajan Solaimalai and Nithya Sree Sivan will be battling out for a bronze medal against Indonesia’s Rina Marlina and Subhan in the Mixed Doubles SH6 Para Badminton event. The duo of Tamil Nadu suffered a defeat against the United States pair after winning the first set.

It was against the same pair, they lost in the group stage. The Indians would draw confidence from their convincing win against Natthapong Meechai and Chai Saeyang. Solaimalai has already become a star with his flying heroics in a singles game and a win here could take him into history books.

Nithya Sre Sivan — Para Badminton — Women’s Singles SH6 — Bronze Medal Match — 11:50 PM

Nithya Sree Sivan could make history as she is in line to win two Paralympic medals in a day. While she fights for a medal in the Mixed Team event, the twin-medalist from Asian Para Games will look to repeat the feat in the Women’s Singles SH6 event.

Ironically, she will be up against Indonesia’s Rina Marlina in both the games. It will be interesting to see how both approach the singles match having seen the result of the Mixed doubles match earlier in the day.

Sumit Antil, Sandip Sanjay Sargar, Sandeep — Para Athletics — Men’s Javelin Throw F64 — 10:30 PM

One of the title favourites, Sumit Antil will be in action today in the Men’s Javelin Throw F64. He is the defending champion as he broke Paralympics record in Tokyo. He proved that it wasn’t an aberration as the Haryana-man broke the world record with a throw of 73.29m. The 26-year-old will look to push further and make amends for Neeraj Chopra’s missed Gold.

Sandeep and Sandip Sanjay Sargar are two throwers who will be in action along with the defending champion. It will be a dream come true if all three could be standing on the podium with the three tricolour flags flying high.

Nihal Singh and Amir Ahmad Bhat — Para Shooting — P3 Mixed 25m Pistol SH1 — 12:30 PM

Nihal Singh has been one of the bright stars among the athletes who have boarded the flight to Paralympics. In the last three years, he has been on the podium on the seven times in the World Cup / Championships. He would want to repeat it in Paris. He might be joined by Amir Ahmad Bhat who will also be competing in the event.

The Kashmiri-man from Indian Army is not new to shooting and has his eyes on the target to get an Olympic medal. Both will have to overcome the two-time Paralympic champion Huang Xing of China and the reigning world champion Yan Xiao Gong of the USA.

Yogesh Kathuniya — Para Athletics — Men’s Discus Throw F56 — 1:35 PM

Discus Thrower Yogesh Kathuniya will be aiming for a second medal in the Paralympics to add to his Silver medal from the Tokyo Paralympics. His throw of 44.38m not only changed his life with a Silver medal but also of many athletes as he opened his own academy for Throwers.

The Arjuna Awardee would want to do more and he has been in fine form going into Paris with Silver in the world championships in the last two years and he would want to upgrade the colour of the metal in this Paralympics.

Sheetal Devi, Rakesh Kumar — Para Archery —Mixed Team Compound Open- 8:40 onwards

The Indian mixed compound archery team of Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar set a new Paralympic record with an impressive combined score of 1399. Today, they’ll be competing for a medal in the Mixed Compound Open events.

The duo’s incredible performance has put them at the forefront, and all eyes will be on them as they aim for the podium
