Paris Paralympics 2024: Simran Sharma bags bronze in women's 200m T12 event

Simran Sharma had earlier finished fourth in women’s 100m T12 event.

Simran Sharma ran her life to clinch a historic bronze in Women’s 200m T12 race at Paris Paralympics 2024. It was a race within herself as she had to ensure she was on the podium having missed out by a whisker in the 100m race. She along with her guide Abhay Singh finished with a timing of 24.75s which is her personal best timing to win the bronze medal for India.

Simran’s bronze was also India’s 17th medal in para-athletics events at Paris and 28th overall, making this edition not only the country’s most successful but also the most successful campaign ever in para-athletics as well.

It was a race for people with visual impairment and a few athletes with very minimal visual power had a guide who would be running along with the athlete. In the lead-up to the race, Simran had qualified for the finals after winning Heat-3 with a timing of 25.03 seconds.

From the overall perspective, Simran finished third in the heats and hence taking a place rightfully in the finals. The record-holder Durand Elias Omara of Cuba lived up to the favourites tag to clinch the gold. Venezuela’s Alejandra Paolo Perez Lopez took home silver with the Indian finishing third to be on the podium.

Earlier in the competition, Simran came close to winning a historic medal in the Women’s 100m T12 race. Qualifying as one of the four runners for the finals in the event, all Simran needed to do was to avoid the last place to get the medal. But all three runners produced their season-best performance in the race to move ahead of the Indian.
