Simran Sharm will also compete in the women’s 200m T12 event at Paris Paralympics 2024.

India’s Simran Sharma missed out on a medal after finishing fourth in women’s 100m T12 event at the Paris Paralympics 2024. Simran, who is the current world champion in the 200m event of the same category, finished with a timing of 12.31s—way off her personal best (12.13s) and season best (12.17s). This was India’s second fourth-place finish of Day 8 after Harvinder Singh and Pooja Jatyal’s heartbreaking shoot-off loss in para archery mixed team recurve event.

Simran finished first in her heats to qualify for the semifinals with a season best timing of 12.17s. In the semis, she finished second with a timing of 12.33s to reach the final. Hers was the third best timing in the semis. However, the 24-year-old para sprinter couldn’t replicate her heat performance in the finals.

The gold medal was won by the World record-holder and the defending champion Elias Omara Durand of Cuba with a season best timing of 11.81s. Tokyo Silver medalist Oksana Boturchuk of Ukraine won silver with her season best timing of 12.17s. She has also won the bronze in the women’s 400m T12 event. Germany’s Mueller-Rottgardt Katrin won the bronze medal after clocking 12.26s—her season best timing.

Simran was born with bad eyesight and has faced many struggles in her life. Her father also passed away at an early age due to chronic illness. However, she didn’t give up and has shown great resilience in her career. She married Gajender Singh a fellow athlete and an army soldier. Gajender is also a coach of Simran and with his support, Simran has won many laurels in the para sports.

She also qualified for the Tokyo Paralympics and has since improved a lot. Simran won gold at the 2024 World Championships in the 200m T12 category. She has won two silver medals at the Para Asian Games in both 100m and 200m.

After heartbreak in the 100m, Simran will eye redemption in the women’s 200m T12 event, in which she is the current world champion. Heats and semifinals for the 200m will take place on Friday (September 6).
