P.V. Sindhu has been selected as India’s flag-bearer at Paris Olympics.

At the Olympics, countries choose special people to carry their flags at the big opening parade. Recently, many countries have been picking their badminton players for this important job.

Flag-bearers are often seen as symbols of a nation’s success in international competition. In badminton, this tradition has been upheld by several notable players. Malaysia’s Razif Sidek carried the flag in 1992, followed by the legendary Lee Chong Wei in 2016. Both athletes were chosen to represent Malaysia’s strong badminton legacy.

Denmark’s Thomas Stuer-Lauridsen in 1996 and Indonesia’s Rexy Mainaky in 2000 continued this pattern, indicating their countries’ prominence in the sport.

More and more countries are choosing badminton players to carry their flags at the Olympics. This shows that badminton is becoming a bigger deal around the world.

More recently, Guatemala’s Kevin Cordon served as flag-bearer in both 2008 and 2024, signaling his country’s growing presence in badminton. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, India’s P.V. Sindhu has been given this honour, a decision that resonated deeply with the Indian public.
