Roger Federer is the only tennis player to carry the flag multiple times at the opening ceremony.
The Paris Olympics 2024, witnessed 183 tennis players from 40 different countries. Unlike other sportspeople, most tennis players often consider Grand Slams as the ultimate achievement, not the Games. However, is there any better feeling, than being chosen to hold your national flag at the opening ceremony?
After all, this is why one plays sports at the highest level—for recognition and fame. The selection of an athlete as a flag-bearer for the Summer Olympics is a testament to their achievements and national pride. Legends like Roger Federer of Switzerland in 2004 and 2008 and Novak Djokovic of Serbia in 2012 earned the opportunity to lead their countries with pride, embodying their nation’s excellence in sports.
India’s Leander Paes had the privilege of being the nation’s only flag-bearer in tennis, highlighting the Indian’s contribution towards the sport’s growth in the country. Similarly, Maria Sharapova in 2012 and Andy Murray in 2016 became symbols of national pride, celebrated as inspiration and beacons of success in their respective homelands.
