Tokyo Olympics Day 2: Mirabai Chanu wins silver, Manika & Sutirtha impress

The second day of the Summer Games saw Mirabai Chanu winning the silver medal in weightlifting.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics are truly underway and there are a lot of action to cover. The Indian campaign has also begun with several athletes already participating in their events. Plenty of major events were lined up in Day 2 of the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday, including the finals of Men’s 10m Air Pistol Shooting and the 49 kg Women’s Weightlifting.

Mirabai Chanu clinched India's first medal in the ongoing Olympic Games when she won the silver in 49 kg Women’s Weightlifting. While Chanu won the silver medal, the other Indian participants failed to replicate her success.

Weightlifting

The highlight of the day was Mirabai Chanu’s performance in the final of the 49 kg Women’s Weightlifting. She won the silver medal after lifting 202 kg in the event held at Tokyo International Forum. China’s Hou Zhihui clinched the gold while Indonesia’s Windy Cantika Aisah won the bronze.

Shooting

The final of the Men’s 10m Air Pistol Shooting event took place at the Asaka Shooting Range in Tokyo, Japan. Saurabh Chaudhary was representing India in the finals after finishing top of the qualifying rounds with 586 in his 60 shots. However, Abhishek Verma missed out on a final spot after ending 17th with a total of 575.

Saurabh Chaudhary could not replicate his form from the qualifying rounds and finished seventh with a score of 137.4. He could not overcome the challenge of China's Bowen Zhang, who scored a 10.7 to Saurabh’s 9.6 in the final attempt. Saurabh was the second athlete to face elimination from the finals.

In the 10m Air Rifle Women’s Qualification event, Apurvi Chandela and Elavenil Valarivan failed to make it to the finals. Valarivan was placed 16th with 626.5 points while Chandela scored 621.9 points, finishing at the 36th spot.

Table Tennis

Manika Batra secured an easy win in the first round of the women’s singles event in table tennis. She defeated Great Britain’s Tin-Tin Ho by a score of 11-7, 11-6, 12-10, 11-9. The Indian qualifies into the next round after a comfortable straight games win.

However, earlier in the day, Indian duo of Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal lost to Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yun-ju and Cheng I-Ching. The Indians lost the tie in straight games by a score of 11-8, 11-6, 11-5, 11-4 in the mixed doubles Round of 16. 

Contesting the other match in the women’s singles Round 1, India’s Sutirtha Mukherjee was up against Sweden’s Linda Bergstroem. The match stretched until the seventh game but the Indian finally won by a 5-11, 11-9, 11-13, 9-11, 11-3, 11-9, 11-5 score as Mukherjee won her first-ever Olympic match.

Tennis

In the men’s singles bracket, India’s Sumit Nagal defeated Denis Istomin in the first round. The 23-year-old won a close contest in three sets. Sumit marched into the next round with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 victory at the Ariake Tennis Court 10.

Archery

The Archery mixed team event saw India lose against South Korea in the quarterfinals. The duo of Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav succumbed to the Korean duo of An San and Kim Je Deok by a score of 6-2. The Indians earlier eliminated the Chinese Taipei by a 5-2 score before facing the Koreans.

Hockey

The Indian hockey teams had a mixed day 2 in the Tokyo Olympics. The men's hockey team started their campaign on a high-note. They defeated New Zealand by a 3-2 scoreline under the scorching heat in Pool A contest. Harmanpreet Singh scored a brace while Rupinder Pal Singh added one for India. 

On the other hand, the women's hockey team was defeated by the Netherlands in the opener. After a strong start filled with solid defending and counter attacks, the Indian women's hockey team held Netherlands 1-1 till the second quarter. However, the world champions bounced back in style, thumping India in the last two quarters to win 5-1.

Badminton

Sai Praneeth lost his opening game against Israel’s Misha Zilberman by a score of 17-21, 15-21 in the Group D. This was an upset for the Indian contingent as Praneeth was was medal contender.

In the men’s doubles Group A action, Indian duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Chinese Taipei’s Lee Yang and Wang Chi-lin. The pair won by a 21-16, 16-21, 27-25 scoreline. The match took 69 minutes to complete after a gruelling tie-breaker in the last game.

Judo

India’s sole Judoka at the Olympics, Shushila Devi lost her bout to Eva Csernovivzki of Hungary. The contest ran for 2 minutes and 49 seconds which saw the Hungarian emerge victorious by a 10-0 scoreline. 

Rowing

Indian pair of Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh finished fifth in the lightweight men's doubles Sculls Heat 2 event. They will now play in the repechage after finishing with a timing of 6:40:33, finishing fifth out of six positions.

Boxing

Vikas Krishan crashed out of the Welterweight category Round of 32 after a loss to Japan's Sewonretz Okazawa. The three-time Olympian displayed an underwhelming performance as he succumbed 27-30 after the third round.
