Kamalpreet Kaur also took part in the final of the women's discus throw event.
The Tokyo Olympics are now into their final stretch of the competition, with the events heating up as athletes fight for the top prizes. Right now, the People’s Republic of China look favourites to win the most gold medals after Day 11, even though the USA and Japan are fighting hard to keep up.
For India, a few more medals are almost guaranteed after the recent heroics in certain events over the last few days. Until now, Mirabai Chanu (silver) and PV Sindhu (bronze) have brought two medals for India. However, Lovlina Borgohain is assured a medal, while one or two might turn up in hockey.
Hockey
When speaking of hockey, who can forget the history that was made by the Indian women’s hockey team on Monday? After seeing the men’s hockey team qualify for the semi-finals for the first time since 1980 on Sunday, the women also stepped up to the plate.
They defeated a daunting Australian women’s side 1-0 in a remarkable effort at the Tokyo Olympics Day 11, with the only goal being scored by Gurjit Kaur. This assures both the Indian sides a place in the semi-finals, as they just need one more win each to assure more medals for the country.
Shooting
India’s disappointments continued in the shooting event at the Tokyo Olympics on Day 11. In the Men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions qualification, Aishwary Tomar and Sanjeev Rajput both failed to qualify for the finals. Tomar started off well in the initial rounds, but fell off later on. He finished in the 21st spot with 1167 points, failing to make the top 8 for the finals.
Rajput, meanwhile, was never in contention and finished in 32nd spot with 1157 points in the overall rankings.
Athletics
Indian athlete Dutee Chand couldn’t make the cut in the women’s 200m finals. She finished in 7th place in Heat 4 with a timing 23.85 seconds at Tokyo Olympics Day 11. Chand was far away from the top three and was eliminated from the Olympics in disappointing fashion. However, the mark was a personal best for the season.
Equestrian
Fouaad Mirza scripted a new chapter for Equestrian in India by qualifying for the finals of the Individual Jumping event at the Tokyo Olypics Day 11. He became the first-ever Indian to do so, finishing 25th in the qualifying round with a score of 47.20.
In the final, Mirza finished 23rd with a score of 59.70 - which wasn't enough to give him a medal. However, his heroics at the Olympics should mean that many more Indian equestrians should emerge after this.
Athletics
India's Kamalpreet Kaur tried to bring home a medal in the women's discus final, but ended up missing out on it. She finished sixth in the finals with a best throw of 63.70, but even that wasn't enough to crack the top three. Meanwhile, USA's Valarie Allman took home the gold medal with a gigantic throw of 68.98m in her first attempt.
