Lovlina Borgohain exits Tokyo Olympics with Bronze medal

The boxer lost her semi-final bout to Turkey's Busenaz Surmeneli.

Lovlina Borgohain's Tokyo Olympics campaign came to an end after she lost her semi-final bout against Turkey's Busenaz Surmeneli by a 5-0 unanimous decision. The young Indian pugilist will still take a lot of heart after winning the bronze medal in her Olympic debut.

The 23-year-old pugilist created history by becoming the first Olympian from Assam. Lovlina continued her dream run in Tokyo. She became only the second female boxer to win an Olympic medal after MC Mary Kom.

While India ends with only one medal from the boxing contingent, a lot more was expected from the pugilists. This was India's biggest boxing contingent at any Olympics. Five male and four female boxers came to Tokyo, out of which only Lovlina Borgohain managed to go past the quarterfinals round to clinch a bronze medal.

Lovlina won the bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships in Ulan-Ude in Russia. Therefore, she got a bye in the first round and faced Nadine Apetz of Germany in the pre-quarterfinals. It was a close fight, as the Indian pugilist was feeling the nerves on her Olympic debut. But, soon she took control of the bout and came out all guns blazing to win the match 3-2 overall.

The win against Apetz gave Lovlina a lot of confidence to express herself in the ring and always be on the attack. She used that experience against Chinese Taipei's Chen Nien-chin, against whom she had lost four times in the past. Chen was the gold medalist at the 2018 World Championships in New Delhi, India.

Bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics

Lovlina clinched the bronze medal there, after losing to her in the semi-finals of the event. So, despite the past reference going against her, Lovlina started on a positive note and was fearless with her combination of punching and footwork. The 23-year-old pugilist controlled the ring and did not allow her opponent from Chinese Taipei to settle. Her exceptional performance and fearless attitude earned Lovlina a 4-1 win over Chen Nien-chin and assured her of the Bronze medal.

All in all, Lovlina is the only boxer from India to return with a medal and she has already inspired thousands of young girls to pick up the boxing gloves. The journey which was started by MC Mary Kom will now be carried forward by Lovlina Borgohain.
