India will also now face Pakistan in international events.

India has delivered a bold and decisive message on sporting ties with Pakistan. The government has clearly separated politics from global sporting duties while protecting national interests. This new stance signals strength, clarity, and careful balance at a sensitive time.

Ties between India and Pakistan have remained strained for many years. The situation worsened sharply after the Pahalgam attack in April 2025. The incident led to massive public outrage which further damaged sporting relations.

There was strong public reaction when the two teams met in global tournaments. Events like the Asia Cup 2025 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 faced criticism. Pakistan was forced to play their league matches in Sri Lanka instead of India.

Now, the government has issued a fresh policy. It clearly separates bilateral and international sporting events. This new step is important as India aims to become a global sports hub.

India clarifies new sports policy with Pakistan as authorities ease visa rules

The Sports Ministry issued an Office Memorandum on May 5, which stated that “Pakistani players and teams will be able to participate in multilateral events hosted by India.” This means that international tournaments will no longer be affected.

Indian athletes will also compete in events where Pakistan is present. This follows global sports rules. It ensures that Indian players do not miss big competitions.

However, bilateral series remain banned. The policy is strict on this matter. “Insofar as bilateral sports events in each other’s country are concerned, Indian teams will not be participating in competitions in Pakistan. Nor will we permit Pakistani teams to play in India,” the memorandum stated.

The government also spoke about visas. It admitted there were issues in the past. Players and officials had faced delays. Now, steps are being taken to fix this.

“This (simplified visa process) shall facilitate their smooth movement into and within the country, in accordance with international norms,” the memo read.

This change will help India host major events. The memorandum has come as the country is preparing bids for the Olympic Games 2036 and other global tournaments.

The policy shows a dual approach. No bilateral cricket or sports ties. But full support for international events. It balances the needs of both politics and sports!
