Who is Mansukh Mandaviya? All you need to know about new Sports Minister

Mansukh Mandaviya became a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat at the age of 38.

Mansukh Mandaviya is an Indian politician who has been appointed as the Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and the Minister of Labour and Employment, assuming office from June 10, 2024. With this, Mandaviya succeeds Anurag Thakur, who previously served as the Union Sports Minister from July 7, 2021.

During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Mandaviya won the seat from Gujarat’s Porbandar constituency as he defeated Congress opponent Lalit Vasoya by a huge margin. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Mandaviya garnered 6,33,118 lakh votes, while Vasoya received 2,49,758 lakh votes.

Personal life, including education and family

Mandaviya, born on June 1, 1972, hails from Bhavnagar district’s Hanol village, located in Gujarat. He completed his primary and high school education at a government primary school in Hanol and Songadh Gurukul respectively.

After attending high school, he completed a specialized course to become a veterinary livestock inspector. In addition, Mandaviya attended Gujarat Agriculture University. He completed his master’s degree in political science from Bhavnagar University. He got his Ph.D. in political science from the Gujarat Institute of Development Research.

He is the youngest among all his four brothers. His wife’s name is Neeta Mandaviya and they have a son and a daughter.

Became MP at the age of 38

Mansukh Mandaviya became a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat at the age of 38.

Roles as Minister of State

On July 5, 2016, Mansukh Mandaviya was appointed as the Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, Shipping, and Chemicals and Fertilizers in the Government of India. He secured a second term as an MP in the Rajya Sabha in March 2018.

In May 2019, Mandaviya was appointed as a Minister of State in the Council of Ministers. He served as the Minister of State (Independent Charge), overseeing the Ports, Shipping, and Waterways departments. He was also roped in to the position of Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers.

Became Union Minister in 2021

On July 7, 2021, Mansukh Mandaviya was appointed as the Minister of Health and Family Welfare of India. In addition, he also took charge of the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.

His key contributions

Mansukh Mandaviya’s political career saw him being involved in padyatra campaigns. He organized several padyatras on multiple occasions, including the “Beti Bachao and Beti Padhao” social campaigns in 2004 and 2006 and tree plantation drives in honour of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary.

Besides this, he launched the E-Clearance for Afterlife Remains portal to ensure the timely transportation of human remains in 2023.

Awards & recognition received

The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) honoured him for his contributions to women’s healthcare initiatives, which included the distribution of 10 crore sanitary napkins through the Jan Aushadhi Kendras.
