Lionel Messi and Novak Djokovic have been nominated for the World Sportsman of the Year Award.
The 25th edition of the Laureus World Sports Awards has unveiled its nominations, marking the beginning of the anticipation leading up to the grand sports night in Madrid on April 22. Acknowledged as the ‘Ultimate Global Athletes’ Award,’ ‘The Laureus’ maintains its prestigious status as the highest honor for world sports stars, each year attracting contenders eager to join the esteemed ranks of past legends.
In each of the conventional seven Award categories, six nominees have been chosen by the 1,300 members of the Laureus Global Media Panel. For the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award, the International Paralympic Committee conducted the voting process. Beyond the elite categories, the Laureus Sport for Good Award will be presented to a program embodying the impactful sentiment expressed by Laureus’ inaugural Patron, Nelson Mandela, who believed that “Sport had the power to change the world.”
However, what distinguishes these awards is the concluding phase of the evaluation: a ballot cast by the 69 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy. Comprising Olympic champions, world-record breakers and athletes who have redefined their respective sports, this esteemed group now serves as the paramount jury in determining sporting greatness.
The official announcement of the nominations took place at the iconic Casa de Correos in Madrid, home to the Presidency of the Community of Madrid. Among the attendees were representatives from Awards Host Partners including the President of the Madrid Region, Isabel Díaz Ayuso and the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida. Additionally, global sporting icons and members of the Laureus Academy such as Luís Figo, Ruud Gullit, Nawal El Moutawakel, and Alessandro Del Piero were present at the announcement.
