Indian snowboarders strike as nation opens medal account on day 1 of Special Olympics World Winter Games 2025

The Special Olympics World Winter Games 2025 will run from March 8 to 15.
The Indian contingent commenced their campaign at the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2025 with remarkable performances and achievements. Indian athletes displayed exceptional skill and determination in Italy, bagging a total of four medals, including two gold and two silver, on the first day.
Competing in all their 6 participating sporting disciplines on Tuesday. Indian athletes won two gold and two silver medals in the only medal event of the day – snowboarding held in Bardonecchia. While Bharti and Sameer grabbed a gold medal each, Hem Chand and Harshita Thakur took home a silver medal in their respective divisions of the Novice Giant Slalom Final.
The win by snowboarding athletes has successfully opened India’s account of medals at the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games. The Indian contingent is set to return to the field on Wednesday, and the athletes will aim to add more significant growth to the list.
A 49-member contingent, comprising 30 athletes and 19 support staff members, has been sent to represent India at the tournament in Turin, Italy. The event promises to bring around 1500 athletes with intellectual disabilities from 102 countries to participate in eight sports, aiming to promote inclusivity and representation in the sporting world.
Speed skating and floorball will be held in Turin, while snowshoeing and alpine skiing will be organized in Sestriere. On the other hand, snowboarding and cross-country skiing will be held in Bardonecchia and Pragelato, respectively.
