ISSF Junior World Championships 2024: Suraj Sharma, Divanshi secure gold in 25m standard pistol

India sweeped the podium in women’s 25m standard pistol in ISSF Junior World Championships 2024.

Both men’s and women’s 25m standard pistol titles went to India at the ISSF Junior World Championships in Lima, Peru; while Caroline Finnestad Lund secured gold in the women’s 50m rifle prone event.

Men’s 25m Standard Pistol Competition

Suraj Sharma claimed victory by three points, finishing with the highest totals in the 150-second and 10-second stages, having a total of 571. Ivan Rakitski from Poland, who would win the silver medal, had the best 20-second stage score – and finished on 568.

Also on the podium was Sharma’s teammate Mukesh Nelavalli, also scoring 568. The top five also included Fiete Kuehn of Germany on 567 and Tomasz Jedraszczyk from Poland on 566.

Women’s 25m Standard Pistol Competition

Divanshi led an Indian 1-2-3-4 in the women’s event, showing the pistol dominance of the emerging nation. Divanshi, who also won gold in the women’s 25m pistol final, finished with a total of 564, while her compatriot Parisha Gupta was second on 559.

Manvi Jain was third on 557 ahead of Shikha Chaudhary on 554, while fifth-placed Marja Kirss from Estonia scored 553.

Women’s 50m Rifle Prone Competition

Caroline Finnestad Lund secured gold in the women’s 50m rifle prone competition, also leading her team to gold. Lund had marginally missed the gold medal in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions final, but this time was the athlete to dramatically end on a high.

A subdued opening three series of six, Lund was trailing a group that included Alexandra Rosenlew from Finland, Czechia’s Veronika Blazickova, Germany’s Hannah Wehren and her teammate Pernille Nor-Woll.

But it was the second-half showing that brought the Norwegian back into contention, scoring the highest mark in series four and series six.

Into the last series, Rosenlew led on 522.0, with Nor-Woll in second on 520.9 and Lund in third on 520.6. Lund’s final series reeled the Finn and her teammate in, to take the lead and the gold with 626.3. Rosenlew would keep second on 625.8, while Blazickova took bronze by 0.1, partly due to a difficult final series for fourth-placed Nor-Woll. Their totals were 623.1 and 623.0 respectively. Switzerland’s Emely Jaeggi finished fifth on 622.8.

Norway would win the team gold as Lund and Nor-Woll were joined by Synnoeve Berg – the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions gold medallist – with a total of 1864.5. Swiss trio Emely Jaeggi, Ekaterina Chenikova and Vivien Joy Jaeggi scored 1860.8 for silver and bronze went to Czechia’s Blazickova, Katerina Mikulcikova and Adela Zrustova on a total of 1857.7.
