India claims silver and bronze on day 8 at ISSF World Cup

There were more reasons to rejoice for the Indian contingent on the day.

The best shooting athletes across the world have kept the spectators thoroughly entertained at the ongoing 2022 ISSF World Cup in Changwon, South Korea. There were plenty of exciting events lined up on Sunday as well. The Indian shooters have been performing at a consistent level. They are leading the pack with the most number of golds and total medals in the tally.

The consistent performances by the Indians and the other top athletes in multiple shooting disciplines are winning the hearts all across. Before Sunday’s action, India was in a strong position in the medals table and there was a chance for more additions to the tally. 

Here is a look at the action from the ongoing 2022 ISSF World Cup in Changwon, South Korea:

50M Rifle 3 Positions Women

Anjum Moudgil added a bronze medal to India’s tally in the early hours of the day. The 2018 World Championships silver medallist made her mark in the 50M Rifle 3 Positions Women category. Her performance in the qualification was not as impressive as Moudgil took sixth place. 

However, the ranking round saw her pull herself ahead of the competition. She took third place after registering 402.9 points post completion of standing, kneeling and prone positions. The gold medal went to Anna Janssen of Germany while Italy’s Barbara Gambaro had to settle for silver. 

50M Rifle 3 Positions Team Men

The Indian team comprising of impressive shooters like Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, Chain Singh and Sanjeev Rajput was in action in the 50M Rifle 3 Positions Team Men event. In the first qualification round, the team registered a total of 1313-61x score to make it into the next round. The second qualification round saw them finish at the top with 878-42x.

However, the team had to settle for silver in the gold medal match. They were close but came second to the Czech Republic team that won the contest by a 16-12 score.

25M Rapid Fire Pistol Men

Vijayveer Sidhu, Anish and Sameer were competing in the 25M Rapid Fire Pistol Men qualification rounds. Post the completion of the first part of the qualifiers, the Indians took 13th, 14th and the 36th position in the standings. The second part of the qualifiers will resume tomorrow with the Indians aiming to improve their scores.

25M Pistol Team Women

There was no Indian representation in the 25M Pistol Team Women event. The gold in this event went to the team from Singapore, which beat Thailand in the gold medal match by a 17-9 score. In the bronze medal contest, South Koreans got the better of the Japanese by a 16-2 score.

Skeet Men

India’s Mairaj Khan was amongst the competitors at the Skeet even in Men’s category. The veteran shooter and a former ISSF World Cup silver medallist finished 11th with a score of 72 on the first day of qualification. As it stands, 74 is the best score and the remaining two rounds out of five will take place on the second day of the qualifiers, which is tomorrow. 

Skeet Women

Muffaddal Deesawala of India took her position on the first day of the qualification round at the Skeet Women event. The shooter from Telangana took the 23rd position after a score of 65 points. She has a huge mountain to climb tomorrow when the second day of the qualifiers will take place.
