ISSF World Cup 2022: India bags gold and four others qualified for finals

Indian shooters start well on the South Korean stage of the prestigious competition.

The 2022 International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup’s latest stage is taking place in Changwon, South Korea. It will feature multiple events in disciplines such as rifle, pistol and shotgun. There are several Indian shooting athletes that are taking part. They will hope to bring as many medals as possible from the prestigious tournament.

Earlier on Monday, India’s Arjun Babuta won the men's 10m Air Rifle event, to secure the country’s maiden gold at the 2022 ISSF World Cup in Changwon. He was up against Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Lucas Kozeniesky. He secured the gold with a dominant 17-9 effort. Paarth Makhija was also in the running in the 10m Air Rifle event. He came extremely close to securing a bronze but had to settle for a fourth-place finish.

There were plenty of other notable events where Indian shooters were aiming to achieve success. Here is a look at the performances and results across the board:

Trap Men Qualification Day 1

The qualification round for the Trap event in Men’s category took place on Monday. India’s Prithviraj Tondaiman is in the fourth position with 74 points after completing three of the five total rounds. For context, the highest score is 75. In ninth place is Vivaan Kapoor, who put a score of 73 after his three rounds of shooting. Bhowneesh Mendiratta of India is in 28th place and has some catching up to do when the qualification round resumes tomorrow.

Trap Women Qualification Day 1

Three out of five qualification rounds took place in the Trap event for the Women’s category. Neeru is the highest placed Indian in 17th place with 65 points. Preeti Rajak is right behind her in 18th position with a score of 63 points. The highest score of 74 went to Penny Smith who represented Australia at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Women’s 10m Air Rifle Event Final

The final round for the Women’s 10m Air Rifle event also took place on Monday. Indian shooters could not qualify for the finals after an average performance during the qualification round yesterday. Lucie Brazdova of the Czech Republic and Roxana Sidi of Romania made the gold medal match after finishing first and second by 261.3 and 260.1 points respectively. Eszter Meszaros of Hungary took third place with 260.1 points. Eventually, Brazdova won gold by a 16-8 win over Sidi.

Women’s 10m Air Pistol Qualification Round

Yuvika Tomar of India was the sole Indian to qualify for the final round after placing seventh with a 576 score. Palak and Rhythm Sangwan finished 10th and 11th with 573 points respectively. Former ISSF World Cup gold medal winner Manu Bhaker was, unfortunately, unable to qualify with a 13th place finish. 

Men’s 10m Air Pistol Qualification Round

Three Indians managed to qualify for the final round in the Men’s 10m Air Pistol Qualification Round. Naveen finished second with 587 points, Sagar Dangi took sixth place with 582 and Shiva Narwal took eighth place with 580 points. The trio will participate in the final round tomorrow with an eye for gold or a podium finish at the least.
