An old incident of Bipasha Basu’s life has reappeared online as she celebrates her birthday today, reminding fans of one of Bollywood’s most talked-about worldwide disputes.
A single image of Bipasha kissing football legend Cristiano Ronaldo had generated headlines, indignation, and unending conjecture even before social media timelines were edited and managed.
The issue began in 2007 when Bipasha went to Lisbon, Portugal, to attend the New Seven Wonders of the World ceremony as a representative of Indian cinema. Ronaldo attended the occasion as well; at the time, he was already a global football sensation.
According to reports, the two first met at formal engagements before running into each other again at a post-ceremony party.
Bipasha and Cristiano Ronaldo were seen laughing and chatting in pictures from that evening, but one particular picture—Ronaldo leaning in to kiss Bipasha—went viral in Indian media.
Due in large part to Bipasha’s serious, long-term relationship with actor John Abraham at the time, the photo soon became fodder for gossip columns. The actress was accused of adultery and subject to moral policing almost immediately.
Bipasha Basu clears kiss controversy with Ronaldo
In a conversation on Aap Ki Adalat years later, Bipasha finally acknowledged the topic, opting for clarity over defensiveness.
“Woh baat maine kabhi media ko clarification dene ki koshish nahi ki par ab dungi,” She spoke openly.
Setting the scene, Bipasha continued, “Main Ronaldo ki badi fan thi aur hu. Portugal mein seven wonders of the world host kar rahi thi. Post that, I met him at a party. He is very tall, and there was too much noise, and every time he had to talk, he had to bend down and talk to me.”
