The Squash World Cup 2023 is ready to dazzle audiences in Chennai, India, from June 13 through June 17, 2023. After a 12-year break, the championship returns to be held within the visually impressive all-glass court of Express Avenue Mall and the Indian Squash Academy. This prestigious event is backed by both the Tamil Nadu Government and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India. It's the second time Chennai has had the honor of hosting this event, and it will mark the fourth edition of the tournament.

In total, 32 players constituting eight teams from four continents will be fighting for the much sought-after Squash World Cup title. The teams, based on their seeding, are as follows: Egypt (1), India (2), Japan (3), Malaysia (4), Australia (5), Hong Kong, China (6), South Africa (7), and Colombia (8).

The competition follows a format that begins with two round-robin groups, later transitioning into the knockout stages. Each match will be contested by teams composed of two men and two women. All clashes will adopt a best-of-five-games structure, with each game being played for seven points. If a game reaches a deadlock at 6-6, the next point will still determine the winner. During the knockout stages, if teams are tied, the one with the superior net game difference in the match will emerge victorious.

The inaugural Squash World Cup was held in 1996 in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, with a participation of 16 teams. The favorites and top-seeded Australians got the better of their strong rivals, the second-seeded England team, by a commanding 3-0 in the finals. Since then, the World Cup has been hosted twice, with England securing the title in 1999, and Egypt capturing the title in 2011, when the event was held in Chennai.

India at Squash World Cup 2023

A four-member contingent will be representing the hosts at the Squash World Cup 2023 in Chennai. Team India will be led by the Commonwealth Games 2014 gold medalist in women’s doubles, Joshna Chinappa, and the World Doubles Championships 2022 champion in mixed doubles, Saurav Ghosal.

Considering both Joshna and Saurav have brought laurels to the nation on multiple occasions at the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and many other international events, they will be India’s biggest hopes at the Squash World Cup. Apart from these experienced athletes, the South Asian Games 2019 champion Tanvi Khanna and bronze medalist Abhay Singh will attempt to deliver their best performance.
