Saurav Ghosal will go down as India’s greatest legend in the sport.

Two-time Asian Games Gold medalist and former world no. 10 Saurav Ghosal has announced his immediate retirement from professional Squash at age 37.

Kolkata-born Ghosal has a huge legacy in squash for India. Ghosal was the first Indian man to crack the world’s top 10 rankings when he achieved that career-high ranking in April 2019.

“I wouldn’t have made it this far without my grandparents, my dad, my wife and the rest of my loving family,” Ghosal said in an Instagram post. “Thank you for making me the person I am.”

Since turning professional in 2003, Ghosal has lifted 10 PSA tour titles from 18 finals appearances. He finishes his career with an impressive 281 wins from 511 matches on the PSA Tour.

In 2013, Saurav achieved something remarkable in squash. He made it to the quarterfinals of the World Squash Championship in Manchester, England. And back in 2004, he did something even more impressive: he became the first Indian ever to win the prestigious British Junior Open Under-19 Squash title.

“Making the top 10 in the world in April 2019 will always be very dear to me,” reflected Ghosal. “Reaching the quarter-finals of the World Championships in 2013 and 2019 are experiences I will always remember fondly.”

While Ghosal achieved great individual success, he was also a driving force behind some of India’s biggest team achievements in squash history. He led India to gold medals in the Asian Games teams event in 2014 and 2022. Partnering with Dipika Pallikal Karthik, he won mixed doubles gold at the 2022 World Doubles Championships.

“A heartfelt thank you to my current sponsors, Tata Capital, Veedol, HEAD, Asics and all others who have stood by me through thick and thin,” Ghosal said. “To my devoted fans, your relentless support has been my driving force through the highs and lows.”

At the Commonwealth Games, Ghosal and Pallikal Karthik took home silver in mixed doubles in 2018 and bronze in 2022. Ghosal also made history by becoming the first Indian man to medal in singles at the Commonwealth Games with his bronze medal effort in Birmingham last year.

In retirement, Ghosal hopes to increase squash participation in Indian schools and mentor the country’s next generation of talents. “I hope to give back to the game in India by increasing the participation numbers in schools around the country, especially the smaller cities,” Ghosal stated. The 13-time national champion also aspires to potentially run a major PSA event in India one day.
