Payas Jain and Archana Kamath to spearhead the Indian contingent

After the South American leg of WTT events, the action now moves to Asia as the WTT Contender Almaty is set to start from August 29th, 2023. Several youngsters from India are set to feature in this tournament, whereas the likes of Manika Batra and Achanta Sharath Kamal have given it a miss due to the national duties.

The first two days will feature the qualifying matches while the main draw starts from the third day onwards. The competition comprises five events as usual: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. With the Asian Games starting in just three weeks time, WTT Contender Almaty will serve as an important tournament for all the Asian players playing in Hangzhou.

A total of six Indian table tennis players are set to take part in the competition and all are stationed in the qualifying draw. Payas Jain and Archana Kamath are the highest ranked Indian paddlers in the men’s and women’s singles category respectively. After failing to qualify for the main draw at Lima, Payas will be looking to cross the initial hurdles and progress through to main draw. All the top Indian players will be in action at the Asian Table Tennis Championships – the reason for their absence from the competition.
