This is the first time both men’s and women’s teams have qualified for the Olympics.
In an unprecedented achievement, the Indian men’s and women’s table tennis teams have qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024, marking a historic first for the nation in the sport. The teams secured their spots based on their world rankings, following the conclusion of the ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals in Busan.
The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) confirmed, “The highest-ranked teams not yet qualified in the latest World Team Ranking booked their ticket to Paris 2024.” India, ranked 13th in the women’s event, and 15th in the men’s event, have thus secured their passage to Paris.
This milestone is particularly significant as it will be the first time India competes in the team event at the Olympics since its inception at the Beijing 2008 Games. The achievement is all the more remarkable considering both teams had missed Olympic berths at the ITTF World Team Championships Finals after making pre-quarterfinals exits.
The men’s team, led by veteran Sharath Kamal, were defeated 0-3 by South Korea, while the women’s team, led by Manika Batra, lost 1-3 to Chinese Taipei. Despite these setbacks, the teams’ consistent performances and high world rankings ensured their qualification.
