Indian men’s team defeat Kazakhstan to reach semis, confirm medal

The Indian men’s team secured a third consecutive medal at the Asian Table Tennis Championships after beating Kazakhstan 3-1 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. India had also clinched the bronze medal in the last two editions in 2021 and 2023 in the men’s team event.

They now face Chinese Taipei in the semi-final for a first-ever final appearance in the competition.

In the quarter-final, India started with a win courtesy Manav Thakkar. The WR-60 Thakkar upset Kazakhstan’s top-ranked paddler Kirill Gerassimenko 11-9, 11-7, 11-6 to set the tone for India.

However, the host nation bounced back swiftly with Alan Kurmangaliyev beating the 91st ranked Harmeet Desai 11-6, 11-5, 11-8. Veteran Sharath Kamal put India ahead again with straight games win over Aidos Kenzhigulov. Five-time Olympian, Sharath Kamal defeated Kenzhigulov 11-4,11-7, 12-10 to restore India’s lead.

Harmeet returned to the table for this second match and defeated Gerassimenko 3-2 to confirm a medal for India and also book its place in the semis.
