Kazakhstan is hosting the event for the first time.

The Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024 will kick-start its campaign on October 6 in Astana, Kazakhstan. The event, which has been scheduled for seven days with the final date being 13 October, is going to take place in the city’s Daulet Sport Complex and accommodate 210 athletes from 26 countries.

The championship is of great importance since it will serve as a qualifier for the World Table Tennis Championships and Asian Games. Seven events will be contested: men’s and women’s singles, doubles, mixed doubles, and team competitions.

India has selected a fairly potent 10-member team, with the vastly experienced 42-year-old Sharath Kamal at the helm of the men’s team. Manika Batra is leading the women’s team, which includes the promising Sreeja Akula and Sutirtha Mukherjee.

The championship, organized by the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU), has a rich history dating back to 1952. China has dominated with 135 gold medals, followed by Japan (18) and South Korea (14) in the all-time medal tally.

The Astana marks a first for Kazakhstan in hosting a Championship. ITTF-Asia will be in charge of the Championship. A new format of tournament is also being used in a bid to increase competition and interest from spectators.
