Sunday brought a mix of joy and disappointment for Indian table tennis fans at the Olympics. On the women’s side, Sreeja Akula and Manika Batra delivered impressive performances. Sreeja Akula dominated her match, defeating Sweden’s Christina Kallberg 4-0 in just 30 minutes with scores of 11-4, 11-9, 11-7, 11-8.

This victory is particularly significant as Sreeja becomes the first Indian to win a WTT Contender singles title. Manika Batra also shone, overcoming Anna Hursey from Great Britain 4-1. Despite dropping one game, Manika used her experience to secure a win with scores of 11-8, 12-10, 11-9, 9-11, 11-5.

In contrast, the men’s competition saw setbacks. Veteran player Achanta Sharath Kamal, ranked 40th in the world, suffered an unexpected defeat to Slovenia’s Deni Kozul, who is ranked 126th. Sharath Kamal lost 2-4 in a match that lasted 53 minutes.

Harmeet Desai also faced a tough challenge against Felix Lebrun, a highly-ranked young French player, and lost in straight sets. With these results, the Indian men are out of the singles competition, while the women continue their Olympic journey.
