China are the defending champions at ITTF Mixed Team World Cup.
The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has confirmed the 16 teams that will compete in the ITTF Mixed Team World Cup 2025 in Chengdu, China, scheduled from November 30 to December 7.
This time, the stakes carry much more than the world cup glory as the mixed team format is set to make its debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Therefore, for players and teams, it’s not just about winning the games but also an opportunity to earn Olympic qualification getting familiar in a format that will soon feature on the Summer Games stage.
“With the Mixed Team event now confirmed for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games programme, this year’s tournament carries unprecedented importance as teams prepare for the format’s historic Olympic debut,” said the ITTF.
The reigning champion China will be aiming for its third consecutive Mixed Team World Cup title, having won both the inaugural 2023 edition and defended it in 2024.
In last year’s final, the Chinese team defeated South Korea 8-1, while Hong Kong secured the bronze by beating Romania 8-2.
India, on the other hand, will be looking to improve after a disappointing 2024 campaign. Despite a win against Australia, earlier losses in the group stage left India at the bottom of Group 1, preventing qualification for the knockout rounds.
The ITTF Mixed Team World Cup features a unique structure combining male and female players on national teams. The tournament will unfold in three stages:
Stage 1: Sixteen teams are divided into four groups of four, with top-ranked teams seeded into different groups.
Stage 2: The top two teams from each group form an eight-team group, carrying over results against other advancing teams.
Stage 3: The top four teams from Stage 2 move into a knockout phase, featuring semi-finals and placement matches, with matchups determined by seeding.
Each team match includes Mixed Doubles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Singles, and alternating Men’s and Women’s Doubles matches as needed. Individual matches are best-of-three games, and the first team to accumulate eight games wins the tie.
The tournament also boasts a prize pool of $840,000 USD, adding extra incentive for teams to deliver their best performances.
