Wimbledon 2023: List of players who have pulled out of Grand Slam event
Two-time champion Rafael Nadal continues to recover from a hip surgery and will miss the event.
The Wimbledon 2023 is set to begin on July 3rd, and the third grand slam is set to feature all the top tennis players in whites for the next two weeks. Former world number one and two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal will miss his second successive grand slam this year. A few top players including Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka, and Karen Khachanov are the latest players to withdraw from the competition (due to several reasons).
In this article let us look at the detailed list of players to withdraw from Wimbledon Open 2023
Nick Kyrgios
Last year's runner-up at Wimbledon, Nick Kyrgios has become the latest to withdraw from the Grass Court Grand Slam due to a torn ligament in his wrist, the tennis star confirmed on social media. In a statement on Sunday, the Australian said: "I'm really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year.
"I tried my hardest to be ready after my surgery and to be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again. During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during the week of Mallorca. As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist. I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn't have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon."
Kyrgios has played only one match all season after starting the year by pulling out of the Australian Open because of an injured left knee that required surgery. He also went on to miss the French Open and will now be absent from Wimbledon.
Rafael Nadal
After suffering an injury at the Australian Open 2022, Rafael Nadal is yet recover back to full fitness and missed his favourite clay season. The Spaniard recently underwent a successful surgery on his hip and is likely to miss the remainder of the season. However the former world number made a surprise appearance at a pre Wimbledon event in Mallorca which is hosting the ATP 250 event. He was there to accompany his long time teammate Feliciano Lopez who is set to retire at the end of the competition.
Karen Khachanov
World Number 11 Karen Khachanov, who reached the French Open quarter-final last month, has pulled out from Wimbledon Open 2023 due to a stress fracture. The Russian will miss the championships for the second consecutive year after the Russian and Belarusian players were banned from taking part last year.
"This is not an easy statement for me to write, but I have to inform you of my withdrawal from the upcoming Championships at Wimbledon," Khachanov said across his social media platform.
Naomi Osaka
Two-time Australian Open winner Naomi Osaka will continue to stay away from tennis for the time being. She decided to take some time off from the sport in early 2022 and after a few months announced her pregnancy. Osaka, 24, last took part at the championships in 2019, losing in the opening round. It is still unsure as to how much time will the former Japanese player take to get back to court.
Marin Cilic
2017 Wimbledon Open finalist Marin Cilic has been out of action since early January this year. He picked up a knee injury during the practice session at ATP Maharashtra Open 2023 and has not taken part in any competitions.
"I'm sad to be missing the grass season and especially Wimbledon; this is a highlight of the season for every tennis player, but I know how important it is not to rush the recovery process. Things have generally been going well the last few weeks with my post-surgery training so I'm staying positive and focused on my long- term recovery. I hope that I'll be competing very soon ," the Croat wrote in his Instagram handle.
Amanda Anisimova
21-year-old American Amanda Anisimova recently announced that she'd be taking an indefinite mental health break. She reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon Open last year and since hasn't performed consistently. She lost in the opening round at the US Open 2022 and Australian Open 2023 as well, adding to the misery.
Jack Draper
Great Britain's upcoming star Jack Draper suffered from shoulder injury at the last month's French Open which has sidelined him for more than a month. The 21-year-old has shown good potential and last year reached the third round at the US Open. Injuries have sidelined him for longer periods else could have showcased his full potential.
“It’s clear my shoulder is going to need time and rehab to get back to where it needs to be. My team and I have made the difficult decision to miss the grass court season this year,” Draper mentioned through his Instagram account.
