The legendary tennis star who won the coveted tournament a total of eight times had a wholesome time with the ball boys and girls.
In a sensational and wholesome video, Roger Federer and the Princess of Wales Catherine Elizabeth Middleton collaborated and stepped onto the court in order to interact with Wimbledon ball boys & girls. The 2023 edition of the Grand Slam is set to begin on 3 July 2023 and run until 16 July 2023 which will see top tennis athletes take part in multiple categories.
Eight-time Wimbledon champion in men’s singles, Roger Federer joined the Princess of Wales in a hearty game of tennis against each other along with their respective partners. They also took part in activities that went on to showcase just how hard it is to be a Ball Boy or Girl at Wimbledon.
Not an easy task
Roger Federer and Catherine Elizabeth Middleton were enthusiastic while interacting with Ball Boys & Girls and got hands-on experience of what sort of challenges they face during professional tennis matches.
Both Roger Federer and the Princess of Wales learnt the process of taking out the tennis balls from their casing in an orderly way and sliding them with an underarm motion along the ground. Mollie, a Ball Girl in training, also showed Middleton the correct posture of standing at the edge of the court and how to deliver the ball to the players.
Another interesting fact that the Ball Girl shared is that they are not allowed to catch the balls directly at Wimbledon and must let them hit the wall and fall down before recovering them. Mollie shared how being at the sporting complex, making friends and being on the court is exciting while speaking to the Princess of Wales.
The Ball Boys & Girls also shared how the first few games are nervy but being at Wimbledon and doing their duty inspires them to become tennis players in future. Mollie, while speaking to Roger Federer about how many individuals get selected in the end, said, “Last year, around a thousand applied and they picked 300.”
Roger Federer and Catherine Middleton also spoke to Sarah Goldson, manager of BBG, to get a better understanding of the challenges and techniques that a Ball Boy or Girl needs to have or develop in the run-up to the tournament.
“To see the training and dedication and the amount of time is put into and making sure everything goes well on the day when champions (looking at Federer) are playing at Wimbledon is incredible to see behind the scenes,” Middleton said in her concluding remarks, seeming extremely impressed by the work ethic of everyone involved in the process.
