Sania Mirza to participate at Wimbledon 2023

The Indian tennis legend retired from tennis earlier this year.

Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza, who announced her retirement from professional tennis earlier this year, will be back at Wimbledon 2023 Championships. Mirza though will compete in the Ladies Legends Invitation Doubles category where she will partner Great Britain's Johanna Konta.

Mirza called it quits in February earlier this year at the Dubai Tennis Championships and has since only played a couple of exhibition matches in Hyderabad. She will now return to action at the Wimbledon Championships.

The news of her participation in Wimbledon 2023 was confirmed by Sania Mirza's father and coach Imran Mirza on Twitter. "@MirzaSania to partner @JohannaKonta in Ladies Legends Invitation Doubles @Wimbledon 2023," he said in a tweet.

Some of the other retired big names that are participating in the event are Swiss Tennis Legend and 20 times Grand Slam doubles champions Martina Hingis, four-time Grand Slam Champions Kim Clijsters and 10-time Grand Slam champion Cara Black.

The Invitation Doubles tournament takes place annually with the regular Wimbledon Championships. The organisers send out invites to former professional tennis players of their choice. The eight Pairs are divided into two groups of four and the winner of the two groups will face each other in the finals. Each match will be of three sets and then a 10-point tiebreaker in the third set.

The previous edition was won by Martina Hingis and Kim Clijsters, who will defend their title in the 2023 edition. The Ladies' doubles events will begin on 11th July with finals being played on 16th July. The 2023 edition of the Ladies Invitational Tournament will be the 32nd edition of the event.
