The Olympic bronze medalist is back in the Wimbledon semi-final after four years.
Ukrainian wild card Elina Svitolina stunned World No. 1 and top seed Iga Swiatek to make the women's singles semi-finals at Wimbledon 2023. Svitolina, who returned to tour this April after the birth of her daughter last October, knocked out the top seed 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 to reach her second semi-finals of the prestigious Wimbledon Championships.
After coming back from Maternity break, Elina made a super comeback in the circuit with a WTA Title and the quarter-finals finish at the French Open. She now defeated Iga who was on a 14-match Match Winning streak.
With this win, Elina has the most number of wins (7) over a World No. 1 in the last 10 years. She has now defeated four different top ranked players in women's singles — Angelique Kerber (3), Simona Halep (2), Serena Willams (1), and Iga Swiatek (1).
She has also become the first mother after childbirth in 44 years to reach the quarterfinals or more in her First two Grand Slam appearances.
Iga, who usually struggles in the grass, made her maiden Wimbledon QF after defeating Belinda Bencic of Switzerland. After being a set and break down she made a superb comeback to reach her first-ever quarter-finals at the All England Tennis Club. On the Other Hand, Elina was coming after a tough battle against Victoria Azarenka winning 11-9 in the tiebreaker.
The Ukranian praised Swiatek and said “Iga is not only a great champion, but also an unbelievable person. She was one of the first ones that helped the Ukrainian people. It was a huge help for Ukraine. It’s not easy to play someone you share lots of good moments with.”
The Olympic Bronze Medalist will now face Marketa Vondrousova of Czech Republic to fight for her maiden Grand Slam Final.
