Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, Lesia Tsurenko, and Marta Kostyuk create history at Wimbledon 2023
The war-torn country is making its voice heard on the lawns thanks to some impressive displays.
The Ukrainian ladies have given their country a moment to rejoice amidst the crisis their country is going through. Elina Svitolina, Lesia Tsurenko, and Marta Kostyuk have all qualified for the third round of the Wimbledon 2023 in women's singles.
The wild card entrant Svitolina defeated Elise Mertens (6-1,1-6,6-1) to make it through to the third round. On the other end her compatriot Marta Kostyuk had it easy. She won the first set comfortably against Spaniard Paula Badosa. In the second set Badosa retired which helped Kostyuk wrap up the set and match quickly.
Lesia Tsurenko, the third Ukranian won her match in straight sets against her Czech opponent Katerina Siniakova (6-4, 6-1). This is the first time that three Ukranian tennis players have all progressed to the third round; considering all grand slams. This is an incredible statistic as this has never before happened in the Open Era of tennis.
Although there is still a lot to play for in the tournament, there is no doubt that this in itself is a memorable feat for the country. More so, for a country where crisis is rife and the land is plagued with war. Kostyk will have her task cut out against 25th seed Madison Keys for a place in the quarter-finals and so will Svitolina against a former Grand Slam winner Sofia Kenin at Wimbledon 2023 .
Despite that the achievements of these tennis players is worth celebrating. Keeping in mind everything they had to endure in their preparations it truly showcases their grit and resilience. It also shows that they are not willing to lay down against adversity but fight against it till the very end.
