Wimbledon 2023 has kickstarted on a bright note with the tournament successfully entering its second week. The Indo-Australian pair had a tough start to their campaign winning a close three-setter against the Argentinian pair of Guillermo Duran and Tomas Etchverry (6-2, 6-7, 7-6). The sixth seed started well winning the opening set and were poised to win the second as well but the Argentinian pair put up a spirited effort to make a comeback.
About the Opponents
The British wildcard entrants Jacob Fearnley and Johannus Monday will be taking on the experienced duo of Bopanna and Ebden the round 2. The British pair had a good start to the home tournament winning against Andre Gorranson and Ben McLachlan in three sets. The pair had good preparation time ahead of Wimbledon 2023 by winning the ATP Nottingham Challenger. Enroute to the title win, the British pair defeated top Gorranson and Ben McLachlan, third seeds Smith and Galloway and an upcoming pair from India Anirudh Chandrasekhar and Prasanth Sundar.
Johannus Monday in particular has played several ITF and ATP challenger tour alongside several partners. Both Fernley and Monday joined hands only a few weeks back and in a limited time frame have shown good success. Simultaneously both have the knack of playing singles as well which might come in handy in the return service.
The young British pair will have the backing of the crowd and overall have the capacity to create an upset with their recent performances.
