Dominic Thiem reaches ATP event final after three years

The Austrian tennis star last made the final of an ATP event in 2020.

In an encouraging news for Austrian tennis fans, Dominic Thiem has made it to the final of the Austrian Open 2023, along known as 2023 Generali Open Kitzbuhel. He achieved this feat by beating Laslo Djere of the Czech Republic by a score of 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 7-6 (10-8). The long, drawn-out semi-final took everything from both players who delivered incredible performances. As the victor, Thiem makes the final of the Men’s Singles category. 

The unseeded Dominic Thiem, upon reaching the final of the 2023 Austrian Open, has reached the first ATP event final after 985 days. He saved an incredible five match points to deny the fifth seed Laslo Djere and make his way into the final of the tournament.

Fans in Kitzbühel, Austria were jubilant to see their local hero reach the final of the ATP 250 event, one which he won back in 2019.

A valiant effort

Dominic Thiem currently ranked 116 in ATP Rankings, was ranked No.3 in the world as recently as 2020. He won the US Open in 2020 and also reached the final of the Australian Open. However, he has struggled for form since then and had to overcome injuries, particularly a nasty wrist injury that kept him out of the latter part of the 2021 ATP Tour.

At one point, Dominic Thiem went out of the top 300 and was staring at an uncertain future. However, determined to make a strong comeback, the Austrian climbed the ranks gradually. He is set to face Argentina’s Sebastián Báez in the final of the 2023 Austrian Open.

The 29-year-old had defeated Arthur Rinderknech in the quarter-final who beat the second seed Yannick Hanfmann in the second round. It will be an intense test for Thiem in the final against Sebastián Báez, who knocked out number one seed Tomás Martín Etcheverry in the semi-final.
