Novak Djokovic will be aiming to reclaim back the top spot in ATP Rankings.

At a little more than six months into the 2023 season, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic have distanced themselves from the field and are favourites to claim victory in every tournament they enter in. This also holds true for the upcoming US Open 2023.

Below is a list of the top five contenders to lift the trophy at Flushing Meadows, including the finalists of the recently held Western & Southern Open at Cincinnati – Alcaraz and Djokovic.

5. Alexander Zverev

Despite a sluggish start to the year, Zverev has discovered his form, reaching the semi-finals on five occasions, including Roland Garros, and more recently at Cincinnati. The German also won the Hamburg Open title this year. He was also a US Open finalist in 2020 losing to Dominic Thiem and a semi-finalist in 2021, where he stretched Djokovic to five sets.

4. Jannik Sinner

The 22-year-old has had a good year, reaching his first Grand Slam semi-finals at the Wimbledon 2023 and winning his first Masters 1000 title at Toronto to rise to number six in the ATP singles rankings. Sinner is no slouch on the hard court, with 25 wins against six losses on the surface this year.

Sinner was shown the door by Alcaraz in a marathon five-setter at last year’s US Open quarter-finals. The Italian, however, put one over the World No.1 in the ATP Masters at Miami in 2023.

3. Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev has had less than an ideal run leading up to the final Grand Slam of the year – the US Open 2023. He lost to Alex de Minaur in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open and to Alexander Zverev at the Cincinnati Open in the third round.

The Russian has proved his proficiency on the hard court by reaching five finals this year and winning four. He was victorious in Rotterdam, Doha, Dubai and Miami and finished runner-up at the Indian Wells.

Medvedev’s all four Grand Slam finals have come on hard courts, including his lone Grand Slam win at the US Open 2021, where he stopped Novak Djokovic from bagging a calendar Grand Slam. Medvedev has 32 wins and five losses on hard courts heading into the US Open 2023.

2. Carlos Alcaraz

A year since his maiden Grand Slam triumph at the 2022 US Open, Carlos Alcaraz has carved a place for himself as an established tennis star. The World No.1 leads the pack in 2023 with a win-loss record of 53-6 and six titles in the bag, including Wimbledon and the Masters 1000 events at Madrid and Indian Wells.

The Spaniard outclassed Novak Djokovic in a marathon five-set match at Wimbledon and will be looking to repeat that performance and become the first man to win two consecutive US Open titles since Roger Federer in 2007 and 2008.

1. Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time. He won his 23rd major grand slam title at Roland Garros earlier this year surpassing Rafael Nadal’s magical mark at 23. Djokovic has a superior record on hard courts winning ten Australian Open and three US Open titles respectively.

The Serb’s record on hard courts this year is 20-1. The Serb recently defeated WR-1 Carlos Alcaraz at the Cincinnati Open and looks strong to get his 24th grand slam title.
