Stan Wawrinka becomes oldest player since 1991 to reach US Open men's singles third round

The Swiss International will be up against sixth seed Jannik Sinner for a place in pre-quarterfinals.

Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka defeated 30th seed Etcheverry to advance to the third round of the men's singles competition at the US Open 2023. This win makes him the sixth player over the age of 38 to advance into the third round of US Open in the Open Era. At 38 years and 156 days, he is also the oldest since Jimmy Connors in 1991 to achieve this feat.

The former World No. 10 triumphed against the Argentinian in three hours and 39 minutes at Flushing Meadows with a score-line of 7-6(6), 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-2. Earlier in the opening round, Stan Wawrinka defeated Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan in straight sets (7-6 (5), 6-2, 6-4). The Swiss international, who is ranked 49th, will be up against in-form and No. 6 seed Jannik Sinner. 

The Swiss ace will be preparing for a challenging match given Sinner's outstanding performance thus far. It would be interesting to see if Wawrinka can upset the Italian ace and advance to the pre-quarterfinals of US Open 2023. Having already won a US Open title, Wawrinka will be hoping to go progress further and possess a tough fight.

In the second round, Wawrinka prevailed in the opening set tiebreaker (8-6) and started the match on a positive note. However, Tomas Martin Etcheverry came back to clinch the second set (9-7) in the tie breaker.

The match at the end of two sets crossed the two hours mark, but none of the players gave up rather stood ground to put up a decent performance. Wawrinka however made good progress in the third and fourth sets to win the match comprehensively.
