The final grand slam of the season starts on August 28th
The prestigious US Open is set to kick off on 28 August with the qualifying events starting a week prior to the main draw. On Wednesday, the US Tennis Association revealed the wildcards for the main draw, as well as the qualifying draws. The wildcard is headed by two-time former US Open champion Venus Williams, who is set to make her 24th appearance at Flushing Meadows. Caroline Wozniacki returns back to the circuit after a gap of three years post retirement.
26 years post reaching the first grand slam final at the Flushing Meadows, Venus Williams, 43, will be looking forward to a great run following her first top 20 win over Veronika Kudermetova this week at the Cincinnati Masters. What makes her appearance more special is that it might be the veteran’s last US Open given the fact that she has been on tour for nearly 30 years already.
Two times finalist, Danish star Caroline Wozniacki announced in June that she will be making a comeback, to which USTA responded by giving the wildcard to the former world number one. Along with these two, six other players got a wildcard in the women’s section for the main draw – Ashlyn Krueger, Robin Montgomery, Kayla Day, Clervie Ngounoue, as well as Australian Storm Hunter, and French woman Fiona Ferro.
In the men’s section, the field will be headed by two-time quarter-finalists, 38-year-old big server John Isner who will be making his 17th main draw appearance. A Former top 10 who remained as America’s highest-ranked player for several years has not missed a single edition at the US Open since his debut in 2007.
