The Polish star is the defending women's singles champion.
Iga Swiatek, ranked number one in the world, defeated Kaja Juvan of Slovenia in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, in just 49 minutes to advance to the fourth round of the US Open. With this victory, the Pole is the first woman since Caroline Wozniacki from 2008 to 2011 to have three straight fourth-round appearances at the US Open.
Swiatek has now lost just nine games overall after three rounds following her latest triumph. Juvan was defeated in a contest that was unquestionably one of the most lopsided grand slam matches in recent memory, with the Pole maintaining her position as the favourite to win the championship in Flushing Meadows. Juvan only earned 15 points overall throughout the match.
Juvan and Swiatek go back a long way and have been best friends since forever. When they paired up for doubles on the junior tour in their early teens, they won gold at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, and they have been close ever since. They had dinner together in New York earlier in the week before learning they would be paired together in the draw.
Despite their deep friendship, which dates back to their early tennis careers, Swiatek showed no mercy; nonetheless, she subsequently said that she didn't like defeating her close friend at the Louis Armstrong Stadium on Friday.
Swiatek, the defending champion, who easily defeated her best friend Juvan, on the tour, to win her tenth match in a row at the US Open will next face Jelena Ostapenko, the 20th seed Latvian in the pre-quarterfinals, who is coming off to a win against Bernarda Pera of United States.
