US Open 2023: Rohan Bopanna-Matt Ebden to face American duo for semifinals spot

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden are set to take on American duo Nathaniel Lammons/Jackson Withrow in men's doubles quarterfinals match at US Open 2023. The sixth seed Indo-Aussie pair defeated upcoming British duo Julian Cash/Henry Patten in three sets (6-4, 6-7, 7-7) to reach the quarterfinals while the American pair got the better of top seeds Wesley Koolhof/Neil Skupski in straight sets (7-6, 6-3).

Preview

The six seed shaved off a close encounter in the pre-quarterfinals. After winning the opening set (7-6), the experienced pair looked out of sorts in the following set - winning just one game out of five games. However as the set went by, Bopanna and Ebden made a good comeback to level scoreline (6-6) and take the set to the tie-breaker.

Matthew Ebden's service error hurt the pair badly in the tiebreaker, losing the set and the match heading to the decider. Matthew Ebden kept making service errors and since the tie-breaker of 2nd set the Australian committed five double faults. Unlike the 2nd set tie-breaker, the service error did not prove costly in the decider.

The service game was the strong hold and the Indo-Aussie pair scored 13 aces to opponents 14. Overall the first and second service game points win too was on the high.

About the Opponents

The seasoned American duo made a huge upset in the previous round by defeating top seeds Wesley Koolhof/Neil Skupski in straight sets (7-6, 6-3) at US Open. Like Bopanna and Ebden, the Lammons and Withrow had an excellent first serve win percentage and overall scored 13 aces to their opponents seven. On the contrary, the number of doubles faults was too on a high (7) which their opponents did not make use of.

The 15th seed pair enter the quarterfinals match without losing a single game in the first three encounters and will look to continue the winning momentum going forward.
