The Serbian is three wins away from claiming his 24th Grand Slam title
Serbia's Novak Djokovic defeated Borna Gojo (6-2, 7-5, 6-4) to progress to the quarterfinals of US Open 2023. With Djokovic’s round of 16 win against Gojo, the World No. 2 has now equalled Roger Federer’s record of 26 fourth-round wins in Grand Slams events on the hard courts. The 2nd seed also made it to his 13th quarterfinals in 17 appearances, tying him with Andre Agassi and Roger Federer's mark.
Novak Djokovic snuffed out the challenge from big-hitting Croatian qualifier Borna Gojo in straight sets and avoided another five-setter to reach his 57th Grand Slam quarterfinals. Gojo sent down 40 winners in his fourth-round match against Djokovic but also made an equal number of unforced errors compared to only 12 by the Serbian. Before Sunday’s contest, Gojo had a good run in his US Open 2023 debut, progressing without dropping a set in his first three rounds.
Novak Djokovic on track for 24th Grand Slam win
With the last Grand Slam of the year heading into its second week, Djokovic is on track to claim his 24th Grand Slam win, which was denied a fortnight ago at the Wimbledon Championships. In the quarterfinals the World No.2 is scheduled to take on American Taylor Fritz, who has reached the final eight for the first time.
Fritz defeated Dominic Stricker of Switzerland in his fourth round match 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4. The American never made it past the third round in his preceding seven appearances in the main draw at the US Open.
Now, three Americans find themselves in the US Open quarterfinals for the first time since 2005. The other two are Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton, who will face off against each other for a spot in the semifinals.
