The Serbian defeated Holger Rune to equal this feat.

Novak Djokovic has matched yet another record this season. With his victory against Holger Rune, he has equaled Roger Federer’s tally for the most top 10 wins in a calendar year among players over the age of 35. His win against the Dane on the first day of the Nitto ATP Finals 2023 marked his 14th win against top 10 players in 2023.

As Djokovic continues his dominant run, numerous records are falling. One of the Swiss maestro’s records at risk is his six ATP Finals titles, a feat Djokovic has also achieved. Should the Serbian win this year, it would mark his seventh title.

The Serbian legend faced a tough battle against Rune, requiring three sets to overcome the Dane. The top seed clinched the victory with a score of 7-6(4), 6-7(1), 6-3 in a match that lasted just over three hours.

Djokovic has solidified his eighth year as World No. 1. He has also ensured a historic 400th week overall atop the Pepperstone ATP rankings. Pete Sampras has ended the year as World No. 1 six times, while Roger Federer, Jimmy Connors, and Rafael Nadal have achieved this five times each.

Additionally, Djokovic won three of the season’s four majors, surpassing Nadal’s tally of 22 Grand Slam victories. Victories at the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and the US Open have elevated his Grand Slam count to 24. His head-to-head record against Rune now stands at 3-2.

The 24-time Grand Slam winner joins Jannik Sinner at the top of the Green group. Sinner notably defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-4 in the opening game, much to the delight of the local crowd.

Day 2 will feature Carlos Alcaraz facing off against Alexander Zverev in the afternoon session, followed by the Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev encounter in the evening session.
