Novak Djokovic will be making his 16th appearance in the tournament when the 2023 edition begins.

The ATP Finals is a prestigious year-end tennis tournament after the four Grand Slams. The tournament features the world’s top eight ranked singles players and doubles teams based on their results throughout the season. The ATP Finals, a major event on the tennis calendar, provides opportunities to see the world’s best players compete for the title of ATP Finals champion.

One of the most significant events in men’s tennis calendar, the ATP Finals has been held annually since 1970. It is a highly competitive tournament, known for its high-quality matches and its exciting atmosphere. It is also a valuable opportunity for players to earn ranking points and prize money. An undefeated champion at the ATP Finals will earn 1,500 ATP rankings points.

We will now take a look at the list of the top five players with most appearances in the ATP Finals.

Roger Federer (17)

Roger Federer, the swish express, stands as a legend in ATP Finals history, clinching the tournament a record six times. Federer has the most ATP Finals appearances in tennis history with 17. The event began in 1970, and no player since has ever made it to 17 editions outside of him.

Federer has won 11 hard-court Grand Slam titles (6 at the Australian Open and 5 at the US Open), which is second behind Djokovic. He is the only player to win five consecutive titles at the US Open (2004–08). Federer has won an all-time record of 71 hard-court titles.

Novak Djokovic (16)

Novak Djokovic is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, and his record at the ATP Finals is simply astonishing. Having won the tournament a record seven times, he has also appeared in the tournament a record 16 times, second only to Federer’s 17 appearances.

Djokovic first appeared in the ATP Finals in 2007, when he was 20-year-old. He won his first title in 2012.

Andre Agassi (13)

Andre Agassi was one of the most popular and successful tennis players of his generation. He won 60 ATP singles titles, including eight Grand Slam singles titles. He appeared 13 times in the ATP finals and is also a two-time champion.

Agassi’s victory at the ATP Finals 1990 was one of the most remarkable comebacks in tennis history. He was 33-year-old at the time—becoming the then oldest player to win the ATP Finals title. The record was later surpassed by Roger Federer in 2011 and then by Novak Djokovic in 2022.

On April 28, 2003, he captured the No. #1 ranking and became the oldest top-ranked male player. He is also the first of three men to achieve the career Golden Slam (career Grand Slam and Olympic gold medal).

Ivan Lendl (12)

Ivan Lendl was one of the most dominant players in the ATP Finals history, winning the tournament five times and appearing in 12 consecutive editions from 1980 to 1992. In 12 straight appearances through to 1991, Lendl never once failed to advance to the semi-finals, and he finished with a 39-10 match record.

Lendl was ranked world No. #1 in singles for 270 weeks and won 94 singles titles. He won eight major singles titles and was runner-up 11 times (tied with Roger Federer for second most behind Novak Djokovic’s 12), making him the first man to contest 19 major finals. Lendl also contested a record eight consecutive US Open finals and won five year-end championships.

Boris Becker (11)

Boris Becker was one of the most exciting and talented players to ever grace the tennis court. His aggressive style of play and powerful serve made him a must-watch player for fans all over the world. Becker’s rise to the top of the game was meteoric, and he achieved incredible success at a young age.

Becker, a former World No. #1 tennis player, made 11 appearances at the ATP Finals from 1986, when the event was held at Madison Square Garden in New York, to 1996 in Hanover. He triumphed at the elite eight-man event for the first time in 1988, when he won a fifth-set tie-break against Ivan Lendl in the final.

“Beating Ivan in the [1988] final gave me even more satisfaction. He was incredibly dominant and an inspiration,” said Becker. “I was playing some of the very best tennis of my life. Physically, it was one of the hardest matches of my life.”

Becker also captured the trophy in 1992 and 1995, beating Jim Courier and Michael Chang, respectively. Becker was a runner-up on five occasions (1985, ‘86, ’89, ’94 and ’96). In 1996, Becker and Sampras contested one of the finest finals in ATP Tour history over five sets. He finished his career with a 36-13 record at the tournament.
