Davis Cup 2023: Italy stun Novak Djokovic's Serbia to make first final after 25 years

Jannik Sinner was the star for Italy in their semi-final victory.
In a thrilling turn of events, Italy has secured a spot in the Davis Cup 2023 final after a 25-year hiatus. The victory was clinched by Jannik Sinner, who defeated Novak Djokovic in both singles and doubles, resulting in a 2-1 victory over Serbia on Saturday. This win has set the stage for a title clash with Australia, the 28-time champions.
Sinner, along with his doubles partner Lorenzo Sonego, triumphed over the Serbian duo of Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic with a score of 6-3 6-4. The victory sparked jubilant celebrations at the packed Martin Carpena Arena in Spain.
Italy, under the guidance of Filippo Volandri, will be playing in their eighth final, seeking their second trophy. Their next challenge is Australia, who had previously defeated Finland on Friday.
Earlier in the day, Sinner saved three match points to stun Djokovic with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 in an extraordinary singles match. This helped Italy draw level with Serbia at 1-1 after Kecmanovic had put the 2010 champions ahead by beating Lorenzo Musetti 6-7(7) 6-2 6-1.
The defeat was a bitter pill for Novak Djokovic, who had a stellar season with victories in three of the four Grand Slams. This marked his first Davis Cup singles match loss since the semi-final in 2011 when he retired against Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro.
Sinner also became the first player to beat the 24-time Grand Slam champion twice in singles in the same season since Daniil Medvedev in 2019.
The Davis Cup final promises to be an exciting event as Italy and Australia vie for the prestigious trophy
