The first grand slam of the year starts on January 14.

The Australian Open 2024 is set to begin on January 14, with Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek as the top seeds in the men’s and women’s singles events respectively. The tournament organizers announced the seedings on Wednesday (January 10), confirming the status of the world number one.

Djokovic, who has won the Australian Open a record 10 times, will be aiming to extend his unbeaten streak at Melbourne Park.

However, he will face some tough competition from the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, the 20-year-old sensation who has been seeded second. The Spaniard, who missed the 2023 edition due to a right leg injury, has been in sensational form, winning six titles including Wimbledon.

The third and fourth seeds are Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner, who played the Australian Open before. Medvedev, the 2022 finalist, while Sinner fell short to Stefanos Tsitsipas in Pre-quarters.

On the women’s side, Iga Swiatek will be the top seed for the first time at a Grand Slam, after becoming the world number one in 2022. The Polish prodigy, who won the French Open in 2023, will be looking to add another major trophy to her collection and to improve on her best result at the Australian Open, which was a semi-final appearance in 2022.

Her main rival will be Aryna Sabalenka, the defending champion and the second seed. The Belarusian has been one of the most consistent and dominant players on the tour and will be aiming to retain her crown in Melbourne.

The third and fourth seeds are Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff, who have both made a big impact on the women’s game in recent years. Rybakina, the 2023 runner-up, has been one of the most improved players, reaching four finals and winning two titles in 2023. The Kazakh, who has a powerful serve and a solid baseline game, will be hoping to go one step further this year.

Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, has been one of the most exciting and inspiring players, breaking records and barriers with her phenomenal talent and maturity. Gauff became the youngest American to win a Grand Slam since Serena Williams in 1999, will be looking to add another major title to her resume and challenge the top players for the number one ranking.
