Sinner also defeated the Serbian in the ATP Finals 2023.
In the world of tennis, making a mark requires not just talent, but also the ability to seize opportunities when they arise. Italian tennis sensation Jannik Sinner has done just that, becoming the first player to defeat Novak Djokovic twice in the same season since Daniil Medvedev in 2019.
Sinner’s latest victory has come in the Davis Cup Finals, where he secured a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win against Djokovic. This win helped Italy level the semi-final tie 1-1 before they also won the deciding doubles encounter to beat Serbia 2-1 and reach the final.
This marked the third encounter between Sinner and Djokovic in just 11 days. Their first meeting took place in the round-robin stage of the ATP Finals 2023, where Sinner claimed a hard-fought victory (7-5, 6-7, 7-6). However, Djokovic bounced back in the final, winning 6-3, 6-3 and securing a record-breaking seventh title in Turin.
The Davis Cup semifinals saw the two players face off once again, with both carrying the responsibility of earning a point for their respective countries. With Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti conceding his match against Miomir Kecmanovic (6-7, 6-2, 6-1), a win for Djokovic was crucial for Serbia to advance to the final without the need for the doubles clash.
However, Sinner rose to the occasion, securing a victory and proving his mettle on the international stage. His performance echoes that of Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, who was the first player to defeat Djokovic twice in a season back in 2019.
Medvedev managed to defeat Djokovic twice that year, first in the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters with a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, and later in the semi-finals of the Western and Southern Open, where he staged a dramatic comeback after losing the first set to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
