Iga Swiatek became first player to be named the Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons since Serena Williams.
The WTA announced the winners of its annual WTA Awards 2023 for the recently concluded season, honoring the best performers and contributors in women’s tennis. The WTA awards 2023 are based on the performance and achievements of the players in the WTA Tour, as well as their sportsmanship, service and conduct. The awards are voted by the players, the media and the WTA staff.
Iga Swiatek was named the Player of the Year for the second time, after winning six titles, including the French Open and the WTA Finals, and finishing as the World No. 1 for the second time in a row. She is the first player to win consecutive awards since Serena Williams won four from 2012 to 2015.
Ons Jabeur received two awards for her sportsmanship and service. She is the first Arab woman to win a WTA title and carry her country’s flag at the Olympics. Jabeur was honored with the Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship Award and the Peachy Kellmeyer Player Service Award. The former award was voted by her peers for her “gracious and considerate manner, support for fair play and respect for others on and off the court,” while the latter was given by the WTA for her “outstanding support for her fellow players”.
