Sabalenka has won both of her previous matches in straight sets.
Aryna Sabalenka will face Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko in the women’s singles third round of Australian Open 2024. Sabalenka is making the most of a relatively easy draw in the lower half as her potential rivals for the trophy face some stiff competition in the top half of the draw. The 2023 US Open finalist is in the third round of the Australian Open.
There is the enticing prospect of Sabalenka running into giant killer, Mirra Andreeva who felled the more experienced Ons Jabeur in the second round in just 54 minutes. Jabeur could manage to win only two games in the match.
Lesia Tsurenko, seeded 28, beat Lucia Bronzetti and Rebeka Masarova to set up a third-round clash with the Belarusian. Her match against Bronzetti took three sets, while against Masrova, the Ukranian wrapped up the match in straight sets. Tsurenko participated in the ASB Classic at Auckland, but could not get past round two against Frenchwoman Diane Parry.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Lesia Tsurenko Preview
The second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka got the better 16-year-old qualifier Brenda Fruhvirtova put on an efficient display, winning 6-3, 6-2. The victory came in 67 minutes and was Sabalenka’s ninth straight win at Melbourne Park.
Tsurenko, who defeated the 91st-ranked Spaniard, Rebeka Masarova, faces defending champion Sabalenka for a chance to play in the fourth round. The Ukranian was a finalist at the Thailand Open, where she lost to China’s Lin Zhu in straight sets. Her best performance in Grand Slams has been reaching the quarterfinal at the 2018 US Open.

Lesia Tsurenko had to work to earn a spot in the third round. Though the Ukranian prevailed, she had to come back from a set down in the first set against Lucia Bronzetti in the first round in a match lasting two hours and 40 minutes. The second round was more straightforward, and she got through in straight sets against Rebeka Masarova.
Sabalenka will find that she is the favourite to progress to the second week of the two-week event. With an excellent 2023 behind her, the World No. 2 is the pick of the two to make a deep run in the tournament.
Result: Aryna Sabalenka to win in straight sets.
