This is the Spaniard’s best performance at the Aus Open.
Nine of the top 10 men’s seeds have safely navigated the first week of the Australian Open 2024. The only exception being Holger Rune, who exited in the second round, losing to wildcard Arthur Cazaux of France. Carlos Alcaraz went through another wildcard, Juncheng Shang leading two sets to nil and 1-0 in the third set. Shang retired in the third set due to a thigh injury.
The 18-year-old Chinese is the first player younger than himself that the 20-year-old Alcaraz has faced on tour. The Spaniard is now through to the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time.
Carlos Alcaraz vs Miomir Kecmanovic Preview
From losing in the qualifying round at his first Grand Slam (Roland Garros) to winning the US Open in 2022, aged just 19, it has been a meteoric rise for the Spaniard. Few can forget the epic five-set win over Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon in 2023 that prevented the Serbian from winning a calendar slam. Had he won, Djokovic would have been the first to do so since Rod Laver in 1969 and only the second man in the Open Era to achieve the rare feat.
Kecmanovic set up a fourth-round clash with reigning Wimbledon champion Alcaraz by beating 14th seed Tommy Paul in five sets in three hours and 57 minutes. The Serbian went to win 6-4, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-0, surviving two match points to oust Tommy Paul. Alcaraz had an easy day at the office, winning 6-1, 6-1, 1-0, when Shang had to throw in the towel.

Head-to-head records
Matches – 1
Carlos Alcaraz – 1
Miomir Kecmanovic – 0
The fourth round at the ongoing Australian Open will only be the second time the pair will be playing each other on the ATP Tour. The 60th-ranked Miomir Kecmanovic can be a handful for the World No. 2, as Alcaraz found it in Miami in 2022 when the Serbian stretched him to three sets. Kecmanovic is emulating his countryman, Djokovic when it comes to pulling off great escapes and prevailing in five-setters. The win against Tommy Paul was his third consecutive five-set match.
Should Alcaraz find a way past Kecmanovic, he would still have to contend with a men’s draw fully stacked with most of the top seeds still in the fray, including last year’s finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas and 10-time winner at Melbourne Park – Novak Djokovic.

Prediction
While Kecmanovic may be the underdog heading into his fourth-round game against Alcaraz at the Australian Open 2024, he has good reason to back himself. Kecmanovic did not go down without a fight at the 2022 Miami Masters — their sole match as of date. He gave Alcaraz a scare by pushing the encounter to three sets, two of which concluded in tiebreaks.
Even though Alcaraz went on to win the event, that encounter will be in the back of his mind when they meet on Monday.
Result: Miomir Kecmanovic to win in five sets.
